I'm going to preach on this Psalm on Sunday. If anyone has ever preached a Psalm, I'd like to know how you approached it. My first thoughts are to really get the congregation saying this Psalm like they mean it. Ususally responsive readings are monotone. We'll repeat it a few times and, heck, maybe someone will dance.
Exegetically speaking i'll talk about form and function of this kind of Psalm, then maybe share a story about huge groups of people praising god--when the floods and the hills seem to be singing for joy.

Maybe you could Sing "Faith Is the Victory" First and then go into this reading. Ask your people to feel the power of this song and then transfer that power into the reading of Psalm 98... Just a thought. LPinPA

I dont normally try to tie a sermon into a holiday unless it goes but when I read this passage & thought of Memeoril day I began thinking how this Psalm of praise & thanksgiving is really what Memorial day is all about. we remember with praise & thanksgiving all those who have gone on before us. Isn't it time we also give praise & thanksgiving to the One who created & placed us together so that we may enrich each others lives & help one another on this journey of faith. And should we also not give praise & thanksgiving to the One who truly has gone before us! "O sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things." I am doing a whole sermon series on the Psalms. It is called Resurrections fruits. I have been using all of the Psalm (Psalter) passages during the Easter Season. A reflection on how the faith community can use the psalter as a way of celebrating the gift of the Resurrection. I have begun to look at the this week's lection, and will be seeing how Memorial day ties into the first verse of Psalm 98 "Sing unto the Lord a new song." The fruit (blessing) I am sharing this week is "Creation."

O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory. The LORD has made known his victory; he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
I am drawn to the relationship of God and state (Yaweh and Israel) in this passage. The victory to me sounds like a major battle was won against some middle eastern foe, and God blessed the people, so they are praising God's hand in temporal matters.
I opened our county commissioners monthly meeting last tuesday with a inspirational message and a prayer. I was surprised there was still room for God's presence in the secular arena. Very few people paid attention to my message about leading with love and servant leadership. Most shuffled papers and got ready for the fights. I hope God's small still voice reached the power of the state in some way.

In our ever changing world it seems that a "new song" is needed! I'm going to challenge my people to think about changing their song (lives) so that the Mighty One who is victorious may ever be praised. I heard someone on television say "Most of us have enough of Jesus to make it into heaven but the question is whether we have enough of Jesus to live in victory." LMM in Columbus

Sometime is not a new song that is fresh rememerance of the old. We have allow our spirith to become lifeless and dry. But if renew our spiriths our song will fresh, powerfull and liberating.
