On Good Friday, the story of Jesus' passion--from his arrest to his burial--is read in its entirety from the gospel of John. For John, the death of Jesus is the sign of God's victory, and the cross is the throne from which the new king reigns.

I'm to preach an 8 minute sermon on "I'm thirsty" in a "Seven Last Words of Christ" service.
I consider the thirst we talk about and the offer of living water far better than the thirst-quencher of Jacob's Well.
A popular Sprite commercial says "Obey your thirst." (I think it's Sprite).
I agree - but not in the usual Sprite-drinking way. Obey the thirst that is in your soul - the thirst to be quenched and never be thirsty again in the living water Christ offers - seek; it's what the woman at the well did. Obey the thirst and remain thirsty ...
The thirst Christ suffered is, perhaps, a physical manifestation of the unquenchable thirst of our souls.
Jesus, I'm thirsty, too.

I'm looking for a contemporary story from fiction or fact that can illustrate the 'Lynch Mob' aspect of what is going on ...
Something like this, (which I got off an internet site) perhaps, but with more detail
We had walked up a narrow street with a drain down the middle in the old city looking for a safe house for the night. When we got back to our car, parked opposite a mosque, our driver, Yusuf, normally taciturn, was looking shaken.
He said that while we were away 100 people who had been praying, left the mosque and surrounded his car. They wanted to know what a Kurd from outside Mosul was doing in their city. Yusuf said: "One of them yelled, 'Let's kill him and burn his car.' Wiser counsel prevailed, but some men in the crowd warned him to get out of the neighbourhood.
Any ideas ??

Rev Ev -
I'm kind of living it, actually. I'm not sure it's a true lynch mob, but there's a woman who's rallying some forces to attack me. It's just the beginning, and this Tazmanian Devil-like rage that's boiling over in her is going to hurt all of us for a long time to come.

Sally...A priest friend came yesterday after he was attacked in a letter saying this third party was saying "these things" about him by another good parishioner. He believes that the "good guy" is saying these things himself but doesn't want to admit it. My friend says he has put it in his crucifixion file. When I asked what that was he said, "the place I put all the stuff that I don't deserve but people give to me." As ministers of Word and Sacrament we can expect the Cross. Look what happened to the Master. When we preach God to those who don't want him, the devil doesn't sit and take it. He re-acts. He comes to get us. May you also know God's peace in your ministry. Peace, Easter Blessiings!
