Help! I heard a story of God's yes when the person heard no.
Sort of like....I asked for patience and God said no so that I would learn to wait on the Lord.
I can't find it today as I begin thinking about my sermon. I don't konw if I'll use it but want to reread it.

Hi Bruce.
The version I heard was something like, I asked God for patience, and God said, "Ok, I'll give you some trials." I shouuted, "NO! I don't want trials, I want patience." Then God asked, "How do you think you are going to gain patience if you *don't* have trials?"
Of course, there's always the version that goes, "God, I want you to give me patience... and I want it RIGHT NOW!" :-)

I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy. I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men. I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for--but everything I had hoped for... Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am among all men most richly blessed.
